Studies on Improvement of Harvest Efficiency in Mungbean (vigna radiata)

Abstract
One of the most serious constrainst to expanding mungbean production is the intensive labor required during harvests. Due to asynchronous flowering and uneven pod-setting, most Asian farmers hand-pick mungbean pods during several harvests. Assuming Asian farmers would not easily change this cultural practice, 3 experiments were conducted at AVRDC located in the sourthern Taiwan to find out varietal differences in the concentration of pod-setting and in harvest efficiency (which was expressed as kilogram of dry mungbean seeds harvested per person for hour) and to see whether sickles can be used for harvest. Varietal differences in the both characters were highly significant and the labour efficiency was increased 10 times by harvesting mungbean with sickles instead of hand picking.
